Project Alternate is a location that appears in the novel, Rainbow Six. In Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, it is known as the Horizon Ark and is depicted in the mission Operation Mystic Tiger and it's multiplayer counterpart, BioDome.

Novel[]

Project Alternate is one two sites that were constructed by John Brightling as part of The Project, an effort to save the environment by killing the majority of the world's population with the Shiva virus. Unlike OLYMPUS, Project Alternate is smaller as it was meant to supplement OLYMPUS. The site was later destroyed by Rainbow at the direction of John Clark.

The Horizon Ark is a research station run by Horizon Corporation and was built under the auspices of the U.S. government's Rainforest 2000 Project. The Horizon Ark was formally dedicated in July 1999. Horizon Corporation has announced that after an initial testing period experiments will begin in the fall of 2000.

The Ark is a self-contained biosphere, an airtight collection of buildings used to conduct experiments in how environments regulate themselves. The carefully balanced mix of plants and animals within the Ark is designed to mimic Earth's ecosystem. Air, water, and waste products are all recycled, allowing humans to live indefinitely inside the compound with no contact with the external world- in theory. The knowledge gained from research in self-contained biospheres such as the Ark could led to better life support systems for astronauts, as well as a greater understanding of how natural environments work.

Rainforest 2000 Project[]

U.S. initiative to encourage private investment in the Amazon basin. Since its inception in 1997, the program has directed millions of dollars in tax cuts and other incentives to American companies whose Brazilian operations meet a stringent set of environmentally friendly guidelines. Prominent participants include Echelon Pharmaceuticals, the Arrow Oil Corporation, the Horizon Corporation, and Nevada Mining & Exploration (NME). Three different enterprise zones have been established, Boa Vista in the north, Codajas in the center of the country, and Villa Bittencourt in the west. The ultimate effectiveness of the program has yet to be demonstrated.
